Reading Chinese
Reading is the skill where Chinese stops being a list of characters and starts being a language, and it is also where most learners stall. The reason is structural: a textbook chapter is written to be readable at the level it teaches, and nothing outside the textbook is. The first native paragraph a learner opens has not been graded for anybody, and past some share of unknown words reading stops being reading and becomes decoding a word at a time.
These posts work through the parts of that problem separately. How many characters it takes to read at all, and why the count everybody quotes is answering a different question. How to judge whether a text is at your level before you commit an hour to it. What to do about the characters you meet once and never again. And how to keep a reading habit going on the days when the material wins.
The through-line is that reading level is a property of the text, not only of the reader. Two passages with the same character count can be a week apart in difficulty, and knowing which one you are holding is most of the skill.
