Which Chinese reader works with text you choose?
Use HSK Studio when you want to paste text into a browser, look up words in place, save vocabulary, and review it without creating an account. Use Readibu for Chinese web novels, URLs, and imported books; Pleco for its deeper mobile dictionary and paid document-reader ecosystem; and Dong Chinese for a structured context, handwriting, and media-learning experience rather than a verified paste-any-text workflow.
Disclosure: Fulin Labs publishes HSK Studio. The comparison below links competitor claims to their own current pages and marks anything not established by those sources as “not verified.”
69-second tested workflow
Demo transcript and test notes
- Open HSK Studio's Text Reader without an account.
- Paste a Chinese passage; HSK Studio processes it with the selected browser-loaded dictionary.
- Select a word to inspect pronunciation, HSK level, and an English gloss.
- Save two words. Saved words are underlined in the passage and stored in this browser.
- Open the saved list to inspect definitions and copy vocabulary as tab-separated text.
- The recording explicitly notes that this is not cloud sync or an account backup, dictionary coverage varies, and storage is browser-local.
Recorded in one continuous automated browser session on August 14, 2026 at 1280 × 720. The reproducible recorder is maintained in the HSK Studio repository at scripts/record-reader-demo.mjs.

Reproducible test method
- Open a clean session and use the same short passage:
我每天早上喝咖啡,然后坐地铁去上班。 - Record whether the tool accepts pasted text or an equivalent documented import without an account.
- Try to hide/show pronunciation, tap
地铁, save it, and locate a future review action. - Record whether the text, saved word, and review state survive a reload and whether export is available.
- Repeat after product changes; do not carry an old result forward without retesting.
The HSK Studio cells were checked against its application repository and current product page. Competitor cells use current official pages; this version does not claim an independent logged-in usability test of every competitor.

Sizing up a text first
Whichever reader you pick, the difficulty of the passage decides how the session goes. The free Chinese text analyzer on this site reports a passage's character count, the HSK level covering 90% of its characters, and the characters above that level, without an account and without uploading the text.
Limitations and corrections
Features, prices, and platform rules change. This page compares a narrow reading workflow, not entire products, and is written by the maker of HSK Studio. Send corrections with a primary source or reproducible test to hello@fulinlabs.com.
